About School Gardens

School gardens can take many forms, depending on the school site, available resources and needs of the students. Successful school gardens can attract butterflies, grow organic vegetables, or showcase native plants. Some may provide colorful or edible plants in containers outside a classroom. Research shows that students involved in garden activities can:

  • boost academic performance,
  • improve social skills and behavior,
  • enhance nutritional preferences, and
  • increase self-esteem.

A wide variety of curricula can be linked to school gardens, including science, math, cultural studies, art, social studies and more.
